In reading the following, please note that any discrepancy between what this says, and the files you have, is because I'm using the same READme for the America Online upload, the new CompuServe upload, and the full set. The uploads have one scrapbook file, the full set has several. The use of the paintings is the same for all.
The ICON PASTIES folder contains 'Skrapbook' Files, a paint document, and this TeachText document. Hardware and software requirements are: a Mac running System 7.
Color (256 colors) is preferred. The people are best in 256 colors, but are not too bad in 256 grayscale. They generally look weird in 16 colors. The flags are mostly OKAY in 16 colors. The need for color with the other paintings varies.
To use the paintings as icon graphic replacements, first select the painting to be used, and choose COPY from the Edit menu. Then select the icon to be replaced, choose GET INFO from the File menu, click on the existing picture in the "Get Info" window, and choose PASTE from the Edit menu. Switch back and forth among applications, the desktop, the Scrapbook, etc. as necessary.
Don't use CUT. A painting might be permanently lost.
The paintings in a 'Skrapbook File' are provided one to a page. Save a copy of your existing Scrapbook file if you need to, then remove it from the System Folder. Put the desired 'Skrapbook File' into the System Folder, rename it exactly "Scrapbook File" without the quotes, and it's ready to use.
The paint document is in PICT format, and has all the paintings on one page. The System 7 version of TeachText can open it, and can be used to select individual items. A paint application such as UltraPaint, MacPaint, etc., or any program that recognizes the PICT format may be used as well. The lasso is probably the best tool to use within a paint application for selecting items.
More about using TeachText with PICT: To ensure that TeachText is used to open the PICT document, if that's what you want, use "drag and drop." In other words, open enough windows so that both TeachText and the PICT document are seen, then drag the document over to TeachText until TeachText becomes highlighted, and let go. Aliases will also work for this. The paintings will be shown all on one page, and the pointer will become a cross. To select an item, place the cross at one corner of the character's outline, drag across to the diagonally opposite corner, and release the button. By "outline" I mean the black square around the character. The "selection rectangle" of moving dashes has to be exactly on top of the outline. If you miss the first time, just click off to the side and try again. For some reason, it works better in going from the upper left to the lower right. When it looks correct, choose COPY from the Edit menu, and proceed as mentioned above. If you include any white space outside the outline, the painting will get crushed and distorted when it's pasted into the "Get Info" window later. But if you don't get the outline, the picture may get "washed out" when it's displayed on the desktop. SHOW CLIPBOARD from the Edit menu will help to indicate what you've got. The paintings without outlines can be selected by running the selection rectangle just on top of the outermost pixels. I've made all this sound more difficult than it is.
In using TeachText or a paint application to select a flag picture from the paint document, do not include the name. The flag by itself is the maximum size for an icon picture, and the Finder will crush a larger picture down to size, with resulting distortion. Also, the names are pictures of words, and don't work for pasting as text.
The paintings in the scrapbook file don't require any manipulation. Just choose COPY when you see what you want. The format is PICT. The only problem with the scrapbooks is the hassle of moving them around, and also the sheer size of these.
Some special icons can't be directly replaced, notably the Trash. The internal hard disk icon can be, however. It seems that, as a general rule, an icon which can't be renamed can't have its picture replaced just by PASTE-ing.
About LABELS: The use of a label other than NONE may change the color of an icon. For the flags, the color might be incorrect; for the pictures of people, the result is liable to be gruesome.
The frame or outline around a character is needed in most cases to keep the light colors from being rendered transparent when the painting is displayed on the desktop.
When some paintings are used, and are highlighted, dark spots may appear. This is because I've used shading to give a smoother appearance of the normal, unhighlighted painting. Dark blue might be filled in with light blue, red with pink, etc. The light dots will turn dark when the icon is selected, but using them smooths out some of the "jaggles" which might otherwise be too obvious in the normal painting.
The paintings were created on a Mac IIsi running system 7.0.0, with an Apple 13" RGB monitor, using UltraPaint 1.02.
If you've gotten these paintings, or some of them, from a source other than me-- These are shareware. If you like them and use them, the price is $10. I'll also send you a disk with files of some 400 paintings at no additional cost. See below for a description. All the paintings are sized for use as icons, except for some puzzles. The price includes postage for domestic mail.
The disk will be a high density disk (1.44 Meg disk) with 'Skrapbook' Files and a paint document, all in PICT. The paint document page size is 12" by 16," and it occupies something like 230k or more. The total folder size of the full set is 1Mb+. A very few of the paintings are B&W. The files on disk won't be compressed. For shipment outside the U.S., or if you want some special method of shipment, send an amount adequate to cover the cost of $10 + shipping. I'll refund any overpayment.
Persons who have the earlier file from CompuServe should please note the changes from what that READme document says. I'm no longer supplying formats other than PICT, and am providing the full set at no additional cost, which includes all the paintings from both the CompuServe and America Online uploads, and is about 400 items total at this time.

I occasionally paint more icon pictures, and will be glad to notify you by postcard when (and if) another set is ready. The price of future sets, which will contain some 50 items or more, will be $5, including postage. The end of the Soviet Union will mean more flag paintings, anyway.
Should this file or the graphics files contain any errors, or if you have any problems using them, please let me know.
The set may change a little from time to time, based on user feedback and my own capriciousness. The items in the complete set at this time are:
PORTRAITS of people--78. Male, female, young, old, various races. Best in 256 colors, not too bad in grayscale. In the PEPL scrapbook. PEPL scrapbook size--216k.
CLOWNS--8 Need 256 colors. MISC scrapbook. MISC scrapbook size--156k.
BUTTERFLIES--7 Need color, 16 or 256. MISC scrapbook.
FLAGS--more than 180. These are very colorful and mildly educational. The name of the country is shown with each flag. The flags are generally OKAY in 16 colors. I welcome comments about the flag paintings, because the references I've used disagree in many cases as to the correct color, and in a few cases are in total disagreement as to the design. So, if you know, let me know, if you feel like it. In judging the flags, please keep in mind that these are only depictions of the flags, not authentic reproductions. The only official copy is of the flag of Xanadu. Where I've found two different designs for a flag, I've included paintings of both, with a question mark between. The one I consider to be more likely is on the left in the paint document. The one I think is less likely is not in the scrapbook. FLAG scrapbook. FLAG scrapbook size--448k.
HALLOWEEN items--13. 3 jack-o'-lanterns, 2 skulls, RIP, green monster, satan, black cat, Mr. & Mrs. Frankenstein, and Mr. & Mrs. Dracula. Most need color, some are B&W. MISC scrapbook.
MISCellaneous--17. Robin Hood with arrow through head, "2¢," strong arm, Apple, nude torso of woman, PUZL, tin man, bear, Mulebear, panda, potted plant, 6 heraldic shield designs. Some need color, some don't, some okay in B&W. MISC scrapbook.
SMALL (menu-bar size)--more than 50. 15 faces of people, many flags, some simple heraldic shields in B&W. Flags need color, faces color or grayscale. These are for those who want them and know how to use them. Not intended for Get Info pasting, but could be used. These are in the paint document only, not in a scrapbook.
Pictures for the System 7 PUZZLE--8. These are: 3 flipped Apples, 1 scrambled Apple, 1 'innocent' pink Apple, 1 'big' blue Apple, 1 "Bite out of the Universe," and my painting, "Rainbow Over Martian Outhouse." MISC scrapbook.
